So on June 1, after leaving Rapid City, South Dakota, we had a fun filled day discovering the beauty of South Dakota!! Word of advise...you cannot see all the amazing sites in South Dakota in 1 day!! I'm serious! South Dakota is awesome!! We went through the Black Hills named by the Lakota Sioux Indians, "Paha Sapa" meaning "Hills that are Black." From our pictures, you can see why they are named the Black Hills. Our first official stop was to Mount Rushmore!! The pictures do not do this monument justice! Abe looks so much better in person ;) And all together, George, Thomas, Theodore & Abe are a great looking bunch. Did you know, the monument was meant to show the 4 men from head to waist? The sculptor died before it could be finished.
Our next stop was the Crazy Horse monument. The Native Americans wanted to have a visual representation of a man they admired like the white men had in Mount Rushmore. Crazy Horse was the chosen one. The sculptor also died before he could finish the sculpture but his family is taking on the call to finish the monument. They hope to finish the finger of Crazy Horse and the horses head by the end of summer.
The final stop before Gillette, Wyoming was the most breathtaking of the day. We drove through Custer State Park, one of many, many national parks in the USA. It was here I climbed over a rock to a bridge overlooking the Sylvan Lake and ended up falling into the lake, scraping up my leg and dropping my phone into the water below! Ooooops! It was a good story, and the view from the bridge was gorgeous!!! So, the experience was definitely worth it! To our surprise in Custer, we came across a TON of bison (aka buffalo). That's all I really set my heart on seeing, and we probably saw hundreds! Mommies, Daddies and babies! There was so much beauty in this park which prepared us for the "mother" of national parks...Yellowstone!!
